Rote and Ndao islands in Indonesia

The islands of Rote and Ndao in Eastern Indonesia are an area of rich culture and textile tradition.   Textiles play a central role in everyday life as well as major life events such as birth, marriage and death.

The islands have a close linguistic and cultural link with the nearby islands of Savu and Sumba, all with incredibly rich textile traditions.

Weaving is generally done by the women and the fishing is done by the men.  The creative ability of these women never ceases to amaze me.  They can conceive of a design picture the colors and components in their mind and go right ahead and make it.    Really impressive.

The sunsets on Rote are not bad either.
